Physical Education
At Caddington Village School we value physical education. We are competitors and athletes!
The teaching of Physical Education at Caddington Village School is underpinned by the National Curriculum and delivered through half termly sport and fitness units from the GetSet4PE scheme where trained professionals teach and inspire the children to be the best they can be.
Children begin to build the fundamental understanding and skills needed to progress in their physical education. They begin to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching as well as developing agility and coordination. Children will take part in team games which will start to build their understanding of the sport and the importance in following the rules and cooperating with others. They will also perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Children are exposed to a wide range of sports and fitness activities through engaging, stimulating lessons. They continue to develop their understanding of tactics/strategies and learn the importance of attacking and defending. Children learn to evaluate their tactics/strategies where they learn to improve their skills to become fierce competitors. They understand the competitive element of sport and the vital aspect of teamwork when playing sport. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular clubs in addition to community wide competitive sporting events.
At Caddington and Slip End Village Schools, we believe that a high-quality physical education curriculum challenges and inspires pupils to enjoy, succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Pupils are encouraged to be self-motivated and develop key transferable skills such as resilience, teamwork, communication, leadership and adaptability building character and helping to embed values such as fairness and respect. All physical activities provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident; supporting their health and fitness. It also enables opportunities to compete in sport and other activities.
At our schools, PE looks like this:
At Caddington and Slip End Village Schools classes receive two PE lessons each week. At Slip End Village School, these are taught by a specialist sports coach employed as a full member of the team. There are many other opportunities to participate in physical activities throughout the week such as after school sports clubs and inter-school competitions. Using a combination of the Chris Quigley and the Get Set 4 PE scheme, PE teaching ensures a progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning from Early Years through to Year 6. This ensures progression of skills and knowledge. In each lesson, we aim to give every pupil the opportunity to develop their skills, compete or perform. Children are then encouraged to consider the impact of their physical and mental health and fitness and how to improve. Adaptive teaching is utilised in all lessons to ensure that learning is as tailored and as inclusive as possible.
PE is assessed through a variety of methods:
• Assessment is recorded on the Chris Quigley Depth of Learning system and pupils are measured as having either ‘basic’, ‘advancing’ or ‘deep’ levels of understanding at their appropriate milestone
• EYFS use Tapestry to identify achievements and any gaps in their learning
• Pupil voice is used to assess pupils knowledge and understanding of technique and key vocabulary learnt throughout their learning
• Where, possible, skills and performances are filmed to watch back, allowing pupils to appraise and critique their work and self-set targets
As a result of our PE curriculum, our children will have a broader knowledge about team/individual sports and will have gained confidence and competence in a full range of practical skills within PE.
Retrieval practice is used throughout - revisiting, refining and extending skills and embedding them in practice.
The rationale for the above is that at Caddington and Slip End Village Schools we use a combination of Chris Quigley and Get Set 4 PE as the core of our planning and teaching. The schemes allow for close correlation with the National Curriculum for PE providing sequencing and progression throughout. The programmes provides teachers support through meetings and CPD.
