Curriculum

Curriculum Statement of Intent

At Caddington Village School we believe that our curriculum should challenge and inspire pupils, encouraging them to look beyond their immediate environment. We want to promote a love of learning and believe that practise, resilience and patience will bring success and build confidence. Curiosity, creativity and empathy will be nurtured and valued. Developing these traits in our pupils will assist them in finding a happier path through an increasingly complex world.

Our curriculum is underpinned with characteristics that we encourage in our pupils. These were derived from our own research and are called ‘SELF’.

They are:

  • Self esteem
  • Self awareness
  • Self sufficiency
  • Self motivation
  • Self control
  • Self reflection

These characteristics are discussed in tutor time, in assemblies and throughout the school day. Our research showed that where children are lacking in these characteristics there is a barrier to learning - we aim to teach our pupils how to recognise and remove those barriers.

When our children leave us at the end of Year 6 they should be ready for the next stage of their education and feel confident and secure that they are able to meet the challenges of what lies ahead. Their experiences here should help them to develop into healthy, happy adults ready to take their place in the community and in society.

We offer our pupils a broad and balanced Curriculum which is designed to be imaginative, challenging and motivational.  Throughout the 8 year learning journey our pupils take with us, they build on the knowledge and skills of previous years. Our pupils work towards learning objectives that develop new concepts and focus learning; we aim to inspire pupils through the topics and lessons that we teach.

Pupils are taught by a class teacher in Nursery to Year 4 and then by subject specific teachers in Years 5 and 6.

The school makes considerable efforts to ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community during which these concepts are shown, through for example, sporting events, a range of visits and experiences. Our strong school values and ethos of tolerance and respect, gives all of our children an excellent platform for embracing differences.

British Values

At Caddington Village School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our RE, PSHE and Citizenship lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding. Children embrace these concepts with enthusiasm and demonstrate a good understanding of their application to their own lives.

Phonics and Reading

Pupils are taught Phonics daily and Guided Reading on a weekly basis.  Phonics is taught using the Letters and Sounds scheme.  Pupils begin Phase 1 of the scheme in Nursery and complete Phase 5 by the end of Year 1.  In Year 2, pupils consolidate their phonics knowledge and Phase 6 of the scheme is delivered.  The Reading schemes used at Caddington Village School include Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Rockets
